2026 income tax calculator: federal, state and FICA

Estimate your 2026 take-home pay, or the tax on a year of retirement income. Uses the 2026 federal brackets and standard deduction, Social Security and Medicare tax, and the income tax rules of all 50 states and DC.

Two modes

  • Normal income: a salary, with 401(k) and HSA deductions, for net and take-home pay per month and per paycheck.
  • Retirement income: traditional, Roth and brokerage withdrawals, Social Security and pensions, each taxed its own way, with capital-gain stacking, the 3.8% investment income tax and each state's retirement exclusions.

Questions

What is the 2026 standard deduction?

$16,100 single and $32,200 married filing jointly. At 65 and over, an extra $2,050 single or $1,650 per spouse, plus the temporary $6,000 senior deduction for 2025 through 2028, which phases out above $75,000 single or $150,000 joint.

What's the difference between my bracket and my tax rate?

Your bracket is the rate on your last dollars; your effective rate is total tax divided by income, which is always lower because the first dollars are taxed at 10% or not at all.

How much of Social Security is taxable?

None, half or up to 85%, depending on your other income. Most states don't tax it at all.
