The Advanced tab does everything this does plus taxes, fees, contribution growth, and a simulation of good and bad market runs. This will carry your answers over so you don't have to retype them.

Retirement savings calculator with taxes, fees and market history

Project a retirement portfolio the way a planner would: contributions that rise with your pay, a return before inflation, fees, a glide path toward bonds, and the tax you'll owe when you withdraw. Then see the same plan through every market since 1926, or 5,000 random ones.

What you can model

  • Account types: split savings into traditional 401(k)/IRA, Roth and taxable brokerage, with your employer match, and see the 2026 federal and state tax on what you'd withdraw.
  • Fees: an expense ratio of 1% can cost a quarter of a portfolio over a career. The tool shows the dollar cost.
  • Work backwards: set a target income or balance and it solves for the contribution, or the number of years, that reaches it.
  • Coast FIRE: finds the point where you could stop contributing and still reach the target.

Questions

Why show "inflation adjusted" figures?

A million dollars in 30 years buys what about $410,000 buys today at 3% inflation. Today's-dollar figures let you compare the result with prices you know.

What's the difference between historical and Monte Carlo?

Historical runs your plan through every real stretch of markets since 1926, month by month. Monte Carlo draws thousands of random return sequences with the volatility you set, including ones history never produced.
